Solids, Liquids and Gases

In science we have been learning about Solids, Liquids and Gases.
We made posters for different examples of solids, liquids and gases.

We have been learning how the molecules in a solid are packed together very tightly so that they will always return to their original shape.

The molecules in a liquid are not packed together so tightly so it will always take the shape of it's container. The molecules in gas are not held together at all, so they will spread freely unless they are held in a container.

We are learning to write a scientific report using the three variables:
Independent variable- What is one thing I will change?

Dependent variable-What will I measure?
Control Variable- What will I keep the same?

Technology Challenge Day!

On the 17th of May, most of Whio and Hoiho went to the Hockey tournament. The people who did not go to the tournament stayed at school and had a "Technology Challenge Day."
Poppi working on her  ladder
Make it stand up Grace!
Ellie trying to make it balance!
In the morning the first challenge was to build a model of a step ladder. The ladder had to be over 1.5 metres and had to have four steps, the top step had to be able to hold an empty bucket. Plus our creation had to stand without any support. Our ladder was made from 30 sheets of newspaper, 10 metres of string, 10 metres of tape and 1 A4 sheet of card. Then we had one and a half hours to build our ladder. We didn't do so well as most of them failed to stand! However, we did learn what not to do next time! We need to use more triangles for strength in our designs.

A sturdy base..
'Catch the wind....'
In the afternoon we had to make a paper windmill. This time our supplies were; 10 sheets of plain paper, 2 sheets of A4 card, 2 metres of masking tape and two metres of string. We only had one hour to make our windmill. Once the hour was up we tested how many times the windmill went round. Unfortunately they were going so fast we couldn't count how many times they went round!

These were far more successful than our step ladders.

Whio Topic term 2 Bigger Faster Stronger.................

This term we have been learning how our world has been moving forward in the world of technology.
We made posters about inventions that investigated a current technology-

How was it made? Why was it made? How does it show innovation?

We learned that there are lots of different new technologies that have allowed humans to push the boundaries of design.

In Whio for science we have been creating chemical reactions and
one of them involved  blowing up a balloon!

We used a small plastic bottle, a balloon, baking soda and white vinegar.
First we put in 10 teaspoons of Baking Soda then we added half a small cup of Vinegar and then Mrs Thomas quickly BUT calmly put the balloon over the nozzle of the bottle and then we watched the Carbon-Dioxide rise up and fill the balloon!!!
The first time we did it the balloon blew up to the size of a Feijoa, but the second time we used 20 teaspoons of Baking Soda, a bit more vinegar and it blew up to the size of a Mango!!!!

The balloon felt cold because it was an endothermic reaction. This means the materials absorb energy from around it rather than produce energy ( exothermic).
A question we have now  is;  how much of each material would you need to make the whole thing blow up bigger, or even pop?

Interschool Hockey Tournament!

On Tuesday 17 May 2011 was the Tasman Interschool Hockey Tournament. Many Saint Paul's Students got involved and it was a great day out.
We played many games which ended up with two Saint Paul's teams into the finals. The two teams were called , St Paul's Steamers and St Paul's Legends. The final score  was a draw, 1-1 so we had to do penalty shoot outs.  Jack Harris put in the winning goal!
The St Paul's Legends won. The score was 2-1.

The Saint Paul's Legends with the trophy.

Saint Paul's Steamers playing Mahana school. 3-1 Win!

Holly and Beth in action.

The one and only St Paul's vs St Paul's final!
One of the junior teams lost the semi-finals but had a really good game. The other junior teams did really well  too. The tournament went all day and there were over 800 children playing. It was a great day. St Paul's now has a brand new trophy in the office!!!!!!!!!

Jump Rope

On Monday 16th May, schools from different parts of New Zealand came to see Peter Nestler the world champion of jump rope and to support the Heart Foundation. Holly, Jordan, Megan and Hannah went to represent Saint Paul's.

Peter Nestler was very inspiring and helped us learn some tricks on jump rope.

Here are some Saint Paul's students with Peter.....

Megan, Jordan, Hannah, Holly and Peter.

Here we are in action!........

WE HAD GREAT FUN!.........

We can't wait to share our new tricks with the rest of Saint Pauls School!

Running Club

Spot the teachers!
In week 1 Mrs Thomas started a running club. 71 students have joined, from years 1 to 8.

It helps everyone get fit and trained for cross country coming up in week 5.

Even some of  the teachers are doing it.
Off we go!

                                                                  Our Running Record!!
After each run we have been writing down our distances.

We run for 15 minutes twice a week. 1 lap of the school is half a km .
Jordan encouraging the smaller children!
Some of us are managing 5 laps or more  in that time!
