In Whio for science we have been creating chemical reactions and
one of them involved blowing up a balloon!
First we put in 10 teaspoons of Baking Soda then we added half a small cup of Vinegar and then Mrs Thomas quickly BUT calmly put the balloon over the nozzle of the bottle and then we watched the Carbon-Dioxide rise up and fill the balloon!!!
The first time we did it the balloon blew up to the size of a Feijoa, but the second time we used 20 teaspoons of Baking Soda, a bit more vinegar and it blew up to the size of a Mango!!!!
The balloon felt cold because it was an endothermic reaction. This means the materials absorb energy from around it rather than produce energy ( exothermic).
A question we have now is; how much of each material would you need to make the whole thing blow up bigger, or even pop?
